This painting is to help explain what a Tonic Clonic (Grand Mal) seizure does to the body and why we cannot just jump up and keep going after the seizure stops. 

TONIC: First all the person’s muscles contract, pulling them tight and stiffening them up, including the tongue which is the strongest muscle in the body causing you to fall to the ground uncontrollably if you are standing. You cannot swallow your tongue during the seizure because it stiffens up, but it can get between the teeth getting bit as the jaw opens and closes during convulsions. 

CLONIC: If having your muscles stiffen up as tight as possible is not damaging enough, then the convulsions start causing the body to move stretching the stiffened muscles which can cause injuries including torn muscles or dislocated joints. 

The person loses consciousness during the seizure so they are not in pain during the seizure, but the result of the combination of the two on the body, the intensity of the workout of the muscles, any injuries sustained from the seizure or fall onto hard surfaces can leave you hurt and sore for days. Which is why after having one the person cannot just get back up and continue-on like nothing happened.
